How to Use Motion Detectors
Motion detectors are a commonly included component in security system packages. Many security companies consider their job done after hanging a motion detector, a couple door contacts and a control panel. But at suretyCAM, motion detectors are just one part of our comprehensive D-Fence program, which looks at all aspects of security to custom fit your needs.
How Motion Detectors Work
Passive infrared (PIR) motion detectors are the most commonly found motion detectors in residential security systems. These sensors measure changes in the infrared energy, or heat energy, emitted by an intruder’s body heat. When an intruder walks into the field of view of the detector, the sensor detects a sharp increase in infrared energy. Of course, there will always be gradual fluctuation of heat energy in an area, so PIR detectors are designed to trigger the alarm only when infrared energy levels change very rapidly. suretyCAM offers three different types of PIR motion detectors:
2GIG PIR Motion Detector
Corner mount 90 degree, pet immune wireless motion detector. Detects motion inside your house. Works well with dogs under 55 lbs. Do not use with cats.
2GIG Honeywell 5800PIR Series Motion Detector
High-performance, easy-to-install. Pet immune up to 80lbs.
2GIG Image Sensor PIR Motion Detector
The Alarm.com image sensor for 2GIG is a PIR motion detector with a built in camera that automatically takes pictures of alarm events and sends them to your phone for immediate visual verification. Images are transmitted through the Alarm.com cellular connection so broadband Internet is not needed. The image sensor was named a Top 30 Technology Innovation in 2012.
Where to Install Motion Detectors
Motion detectors are typically mounted on a wall or in a corner about six feet above the floor. They should be mounted in a place that provides a clear view of as much of a room or hallway as possible, pointing toward likely entry points, such as a door, window, stairway or hallway. The motion detector should also be securely mounted and away from heating vents to decrease the potential for false alarms.
A couple motion detectors go a long way. Your suretyCAM engineer can help you determine likely entry points for intruders and place the motion detectors in the spots that will provide the best coverage.
How to Use Motion Detectors with Pets

Dexter – the suretyCAM “Enforcer”
Our PIR motion detectors are pet-immune and can distinguish between a human being and a dog under 80lbs. For homes with a large dog over 80lbs, you already have one of the best built-in motion detectors available.
For families with cats, PIR motion detectors are typically not recommended. Unless your cat(s) is confined to one room while you’re away, suretyCAM can help you explore additional options beside motions detectors to help protect your home, such as door/window reinforcement, glass break detectors, exterior motion detectors, additional door/window contacts, and surveillance video.
