Z-Wave Deadbolt Locks: A Drastic Improvement to a Simple Security Device

One thing I really enjoy about my job is by finding little things we can do to improve our security, especially when it’s an improvement to something that has worked in the past. In this case, it’s the standard door lock. “How can something so simple be improved?” you may be asking. You can receive a text or email the moment little Jimmy gets home from school! I wish we would have had these locks when I was growing up, I can’t count the number of times I locked myself out of the house because I forgot my keys. Everybody gets locked out on occasion, even the President. The Kwikset runs off of 4 easily changed AA batteries and the lock is designed to let you know when the batteries begin to run low.

It can be controlled remotely from your computer or smart phone. Have you ever had to have your neighbor water your plants or take care of your pets while you’re out of town? Maybe you just needed to have someone stop at your house to pick something up or drop something off. Now you don’t have to give out a key and hope it doesn’t get lost or misplaced. With the Kwikset Z-Wave lock you can just unlock your door remotely and let someone in and then lock it after they leave. Unlike the Schlage electronic deadbolt, the Kwikset is motorized, which means you can actually lock and unlock the door remotely without the need to be at the door.

For example, you could program your alarm to arm itself, your thermostat to go down, and your lights to all shut off once the door is locked. You can also program all those things to come back on again when the door unlocks. The scenes you program could save you a lot of money in your utility bills. They can also provide you peace of mind by never having to worry if you left the bathroom light or the clothes iron on and it burning down your house because you had to rush out to work in the morning. The Kwikset also has an autolock feature and will lock itself after 30 seconds.

The Kwikset lock comes in a traditional and contemporary style and is available in 3 finishes (Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, and Polished Brass) to work with the style of your home or business. It also comes in deadbolt or levers depending on the style of door you have.

 

It’s easy to think that the simplest form of security we have, the door lock, can’t and doesn’t need to be improved, but the truth is that it has been improved. The Kwikset lock is a vast improvement to the manual door lock and a boost both to home security and home automation.
