The RE106 Tilt Sensor is a commonly used sensor on overhead garage doors. It is easy to program, simple to mount, takes almost no time to install. They work well as “no response” sensors, ones that do not generate an alarm if opened. Through Alarm.com you are able to specify notifications for when the door is left open for 5 minutes, or whenever it is opened during a weekday, etc.

If you are looking for an overhead garage door sensor to act as an alarm sensor, we do not recommend using a tilt sensor. There are a couple reasons behind this:

  1. Tilt sensors do not activate until roughly 45 degrees off vertical. This means that the top panel of your overhead garage door must be tilted 45 degrees. Depending on the height and angle of the door’s wheel tracks, a common door may need to be open anywhere between 1 to 3 feet before the sensor trips.
  2. Due to the way the sensing element works, tilt sensors are known to cause false activation in inclement, windy weather, or from objects striking the garage door causing vibration.

A more reliable form of garage sensor that we recommend for any instance where you want your overhead garage door to be an alarm monitored zone would be a wired overhead garage door contact connected to the input terminals of a wireless sensor which can act as a transmitter. The RE101 has input terminals that can be used for this purpose. This combination prevents false activation and the sensor will trip based on the magnetic gap of the wired contact, only a few inches.
